Since he was very little, Hideki Akechi became aware that his parents were different from those of his peers.
He was seldom greeted with "good morning" at the breakfast table, never got a loving good night kiss before going to bed, and never knew what it was like to be hugged by his mother and told stories on a warm afternoon... This was because his parents were always busy and had very little time to spend with him.
It didn't matter though. A well-behaved and clever child, he learned how to spend his time when he was alone at home.
Gramophones, radios... all kinds of sound-making boxes that made his room lively were his playmates. Among them, Hideki loved the television the most as the square screen showed all kinds of novelties and scenes of happy families.
Most likely deluded by the warm atmosphere on television, one day, Hideki fought his drowsiness and stayed up until midnight until his father finally returned home late at night. With two hands, Hideki carefully presented to him the new origami animal he learned to make.
"Father, I made this little rabbit for you." Little Hideki stands as high as he can on tiptoes and puts the origami rabbit on his father's desk.
According to what happens to people on television, his father should embrace him, praise his skills, and call the butler over to store the origami rabbit in a dust-free display case... This was the first time Hideki imitated children on television. He felt a little shy even though he was still very young, and he lowered his head with a blush on his face.
Because of this, he saw how the origami rabbit he spent all afternoon making fell to the ground and get crushed by the wheels of the chair.
"This kind of thing is useless for your future, so don't learn how to make stuff like this anymore." His father's tone is flat, as if throwing away his son's gift is even more insignificant than signing a document. "Since you're already capable of learning, I'll have someone arrange a course for you. Your goal is to become a good politician in the future."
"Poli...tician? Father, I-I don't understand."
Hideki's father looked up from the desk and looked him in the eye for the first time tonight. "You were destined to become a good politician the moment you were born in the Akechi family. You don't have a choice."
As the current head of the Akechi family, Hideki's father still had lots of things to do and didn't care if his young son understood what he said. He waved casually, signaling for Hideki to stop disturbing his work.
The young Hideki didn't get the praise he was looking forward to in the end.
Pursing his mouth, he looked at the broken origami rabbit with reddening eyes and murmured: "I... I don't like this..."
Whether Hideki didn't like to be a politician or didn't like his father's indifference is a question that continues to trouble him for a long time in the future.
