HarunaIgarashi's Story | Born to Be Wild | Born to Be Wild |
"Haruna, go make lots of friends, alright?" "Okay!" Haruna Igarashi let go of her mother's hand and bounced off with her backpack into the group of children at the children's corner in the park. She was four then, and her mother brought her to the nearby park to practice "socializing." According to her mother, "socializing" meant becoming good friends with other children. But what counts as a good friend? Haruna tilted her little head at the sight of the sandpit in the playground, and a flash of inspiration struck her. Meanwhile, Mrs. Igarashi was chatting with the other housewives after leaving her daughter to play with the children. "Haha, not at all. My Haruna is quite the shy one too... Haruna?" Upon hearing a housewife gasp next to her, Mrs. Igarashi turned to look – a group of lively children were bouncing around in the sandpit, their little faces smeared with a riot of colors. At the center of it all, the leader of the group was waving a watercolor brush with unbridled enthusiasm. "Stop it!" Mrs. Igarashi gasped and rushed over. Unfortunately, she was too late. The kids now looked like a bunch of silly clowns. Mrs. Igarashi turned red, a mix of embarrassment and anger bubbling up inside her. "Haruna! Wh-What have you done?!" She'd told Haruna to bring along the watercolor brushes to paint with the other children, not to paint their faces. "It's camouflage! Once done, we can all go on an adventure! Look! We just found treasure!" Haruna took out a handful of grayish pebbles from her pocket. Obviously, she'd just pulled them out of the sandpit. Mrs. Igarashi nearly fainted on the spot. In the end, Haruna's socializing training was cut short as she hurriedly apologized to everyone. Once they got home, Mrs. Igarashi washed her daughter's face while holding in a bellyful of anger. Meanwhile, Haruna stood on the mini stool before the sink and scrubbed the pebbles under running water. A short while later, she raised her little hand, a warm smile curling up across her face, and she passed one of the pebbles to her mother. "This is the most beautiful one! It's for you, Mom!" Haruna's tiny face was flushed red from all the steam, and the pebble in her grasp gleamed with a polished shine. "..." Mrs. Igarashi had been thinking about the lesson she was about to give her daughter, yet at that moment, her heart melted entirely. "Sigh... Why am I getting upset with a four-year-old... It's not like I just found out how playful and mischievous she is." Mrs. Igarashi put the pebble back in Haruna's palm. "You discovered this treasure, Haruna. So keep it for yourself. But tell me before you go on another adventure, alright? Especially if you'll be bringing the other children along." "Okay!" Just like that, the Igarashi family was back to its warm and cozy atmosphere. "Anyway, picking pebbles in the sand is fine, but why did you have to paint that camouflage on them?" "I learned it from you, Mom!" "Huh?" Mrs. Igarashi abruptly froze as she was wiping her daughter's face. She had a bad premonition. "You're always putting on so many layers of 'camouflage' when you go out. It's so different from how you look at home. It's all part of the plan for a successful adventure, right? Just like in my anime!" "Wh-What?!" "Those." Haruna points at the makeup bag filled with sunscreen, foundation, and concealer above the sink. "...Haruna, please don't tell me you've..." "Hehe! You said I should make lots of friends, and the information is vital for adventures! So... I shared everything with all of them!" "All of them..." Realizing the conversation the other parents would be having with their children, Mrs. Igarashi silently put down the face towel and took a moment to calm herself against the wall. Meanwhile, Haruna played fondly with the pebble in her grasp and thought happily to herself – "Hehe! Let's go on another adventure there!" |
