...I'm falling.
What a strange experience. I stretch out all four limbs like a thin maple leaf, at the mercy of even the slightest gust of wind.
The wind cannot support me, however, and only offers the illusion of briefly soaring in the sky. My body is in the tyrannical grip of gravity, and no matter how comically I struggle, the inevitable result is down, down like someone drowning beneath the waves...
Before today, I'd imagined this to be like those drop tower rides, or bungee jumping. Ah, how foolish I was! I couldn't have been more wrong.
There are so many differences. Take right now, for example: After the initial shock of weightlessness, the gasping wind offers a novel, almost existential experience, a constant barrage of stimuli.
...Correction. I forgot that I'm wearing earmuffs. Judging by how my exposed skin feels, that rather benign 'gasping' of the wind is merely an illusion. It's actually roaring by my ears.
Right now, the only thing that can break through the shrieking gale and reach my ears, is the booming voice of the man behind me.
[Joseph] Hey, partner! Are you okay?
Well, to be quite honest I'm not exactly okay, but just hearing your voice is a little reassuring.
Right now, Joseph and I are thousands of feet up in the air. As there was no suitable place to land a plane at the site of our expedition, Joseph suggested the exhilarating alternative of a tandem skydive.
[Joseph] You look pretty calm, partner. I thought you'd be screaming your head off.
It's not that I'm brave, it's that at this altitude, as soon as I open my mouth the freezing air will pour straight down my throat. I can't even speak, let alone scream.
But my biggest mistake was to close my eyes, thinking that not being able to see would alleviate the panic brought about by weightlessness. But it didn't work! Blocking my vision just brought about a different type of horror.
[Joseph] Woohoo—look! Isn't everything so beautiful from up here?!
Really...? Maybe I should open my eyes and take a look?
